The Howden Suite

Named after the historic market town of Howden in which Bishops Manor is situated. Howden was originally named ‘Heaffudene’ by the Anglo-Saxons. ‘Heafud’ meaning head and ‘dene’ meaning valley which refers to the valley created by the Old Derwent River on which Howden was built. Howden was given to the Bishops of Durham in 1080 by William the Conqueror and they built Bishops Manor to serve as an important residence and administration centre.  In 1200, King John gave Bishop Phillip the licence to hold fairs in the town and in the eighteenth century Howden hosted a nationally important annual horse fair with an estimated 4000 horses being shown every day of the sale in 1807.
